The precious metals in the ore then become the positive pole of the battery and when they touch the mercury, a high current flows that is equivalent to many hundreds of amps per sq. ft. This powerful current cleans the precious metals and covers them with mercury. This process will often work to make gold, silver and platinum amalgamate when they will not do so under other methods.
